Maxtang N100 Fanless Mini PC Reviews and Silent Alternatives

Maxtang's fanless N100 drew attention from buyers who wanted a silent, industrial-style box. It has no current US model, but the traits that decide any fanless N100, heat, throttling and ports, are easy to check on the twelve fanless N100 families on sale.

Maxtang status

Maxtang has no current US fanless N100 model. The silent N100s selling best in its place are the MeLE PCG02 stick for a screen, the MeLE Quieter 4C for a desk, and industrial fanless boxes from FANPEEC, HISTTON and VENOEN for serial ports and wide storage.

  • Maxtang fanless N100: no current US model
  • Silent desk: MeLE Quieter 4C
  • Silent screen PC: MeLE PCG02 stick
  • Industrial: FANPEEC, HISTTON, VENOEN

Maxtang built its fanless N100 for industrial buyers

Maxtang is a Chinese maker of compact, NUC-style and industrial PCs, and its fanless N100 followed that line: a sealed metal case, a passive heatsink and ports aimed at offices and embedded jobs. It appealed to buyers who wanted a silent box without a consumer look.

There is no current US version of Maxtang's fanless N100. The chip inside it is the same Intel N100 found in every other box, with four cores, a 3.4GHz boost and a 6W base power rating, so what its reviews said about behaviour applies across the fanless class.

  • Silence: no fan means no noise and no fan to clog with dust or wear out.
  • Heat: the case is the heatsink, so it runs hot to the touch under load.
  • Sustained speed: long all-core loads settle below the burst clock once the case warms.
  • Ports: industrial boxes favour serial ports and dual Ethernet over extra USB-C.

Those four traits decide whether a fanless N100 suits you, whatever the badge. Each of the silent N100s on sale now trades them differently: MeLE leans on size and silence, the industrial makers on ports and storage.

For fanless models in general, the fanless N100 guide goes deeper on throttling and noise.

Five checks every fanless N100 review should cover

Reviews of a fanless box are only useful if they test what fanless changes. When reading about Maxtang's N100, or any silent N100, look for these five points before the benchmark charts.

  1. Surface temperature under load. 55–70°C is normal for passive cooling. Much hotter suggests a poor thermal path from chip to case.
  2. Clock speed after twenty minutes of load. A short benchmark hides throttling; a long one shows where the case settles.
  3. Idle power at the wall. Around 6–10W is typical for a whole N100 system.
  4. Coil whine. No fan does not always mean no sound; some power stages buzz faintly under load.
  5. Memory type. Soldered LPDDR5 or a SO-DIMM slot changes whether the box can grow.

A review that skips these is reviewing the N100, not the fanless box. That is still useful for performance, since every N100 behaves alike for short tasks, but it says little about the case.

  • For desk work and video, throttling rarely shows.
  • For transcoding, the media engine does the work and heat stays modest.
  • For compiling or compressing for hours, a fan-cooled box keeps a higher clock.

Performance figures in any fanless review should therefore be read as a floor for burst work and a ceiling for long jobs.

Passive cases run at 55–70°C on the surface

MeLE states that its fanless N100 cases reach 55°C to 70°C on the surface under load, and that this meets the IEC 62368-1 safety standard. That range is typical of the class, because the case is doing the job a fan would otherwise do.

Hot to the touch is not the same as hot inside. The processor is designed to run far above those surface figures, and the case temperature shows that heat is leaving the chip as intended. Placement is what keeps it that way.

PlacementEffect on a fanless N100
Open shelf or deskBest: air moves freely around the fins
VESA mount behind a monitorGood, if the monitor itself is not venting heat onto it
Closed TV cabinetPoor: heat builds up and the clock drops sooner
Stacked under a routerPoor: two heat sources, no airflow

Orientation matters on finned cases. Fins that run vertically let warm air rise out of them; fins pressed against a desk trap it.

A 6W chip is what makes fanless practical at all. The N100's low rating lets a palm-sized aluminium case shed its heat without a fan, which older 10W and 15W chips managed less comfortably.

A fanless box that throttles in a hot cabinet is still silent and still works. It simply finishes long jobs more slowly.

Standout

The industrial pick is the FANPEEC fanless N100

The FANPEEC takes a DDR4 SO-DIMM up to 32GB and three drives at once: M.2 NVMe, mSATA and a 2.5-inch SATA disk. Two RS232 ports, dual gigabit Ethernet, TPM 2.0 and a watchdog timer cover POS, kiosk and machine-control work.

MeLE's Quieter 4C and PCG02 cover the desk and the screen

For most former Maxtang shoppers, the practical replacement is MeLE, the maker with the widest fanless N100 range. Two of its models cover the common jobs.

The MeLE Quieter 4C is the silent desk PC. It carries 16GB of LPDDR5 at 4800MHz, 512GB of storage, an internal M.2 2280 slot for NVMe or SATA drives up to 4TB and a microSD slot. Two HDMI ports and a full-function USB-C drive three 4K screens, and the USB-C port also takes power from a 36W or larger PD supply.

The MeLE PCG02 is the silent screen PC. Its male HDMI plug goes straight into a TV or monitor, its USB-C drives a second 4K display, and it runs Windows 11 Pro on 8GB of LPDDR5 and 128GB of high-endurance eMMC.

  • Office desk: Quieter 4C.
  • Signage, meeting room, TV: PCG02.
  • Small dual-LAN router or kiosk: Quieter DL, with 4GB and 128GB.

The PCG02 adds a Kensington lock slot, Wake-on-LAN, PXE boot and auto power-on after an outage, the features an unattended signage or kiosk box needs. Between the three, memory is the dividing line: 16GB for a desk, 8GB for a screen, 4GB for a single-purpose appliance. The full MeLE N100 line compares them in more depth.

Industrial fanless N100s add RS232 and a watchdog

Maxtang's industrial leaning is best matched by the fanless boxes from FANPEEC, HISTTON and VENOEN. All three put serial ports, dual Ethernet and a SO-DIMM slot into a finned aluminium case.

The FANPEEC is the most complete of the three. It takes up to 32GB of DDR4, three drives at once, and adds two DB9 RS232 ports, TPM 2.0, Wake-on-LAN, PXE and a watchdog timer. The HISTTON pairs HDMI with VGA for older monitors, and the VENOEN adds a DisplayPort for three screens.

  • Serial ports: POS terminals, CNC controllers, legacy lab equipment.
  • Watchdog timer: restarts a hung system without a site visit.
  • Three storage slots: OS on NVMe, data on a 2.5-inch drive, a spare on mSATA.

For silent networking, the HEIGAOLAPC is a fanless four-port 2.5GbE box running on Realtek RTL8125BG controllers, and it comes with 8GB and 128GB fitted. The ZOTAC ZBOX CI337 Nano covers buyers who want a name-brand fanless barebone.

Whichever you choose, it runs the same N100 Maxtang used, so the performance described in Maxtang reviews carries over unchanged.

Industrial boxes are heavier than desk models, 0.6kg for the FANPEEC and HISTTON and 1.2kg for the VENOEN, because the extra aluminium is the cooling. The FANPEEC and VENOEN accept VESA mounting, which keeps them off a dusty floor.

FAQ

Asked often

Is the Maxtang fanless N100 still available?

Maxtang has no current US fanless N100 model. The MeLE Quieter 4C, the MeLE PCG02 stick and industrial boxes from FANPEEC, HISTTON and VENOEN are the silent N100s in its place.

Do fanless N100 mini PCs throttle?

Under long all-core loads they settle below the burst clock once the case warms. Desk work, video and transcoding rarely push them that far.

How hot does a fanless N100 get?

MeLE rates its fanless cases at 55–70°C on the surface under load, which is normal for passive cooling and within safety standards.

Which fanless N100 has serial ports?

The FANPEEC, HISTTON and VENOEN industrial boxes each have two RS232 ports, along with dual Ethernet and a SO-DIMM slot.

Is a fanless N100 completely silent?

There is no fan, so it makes no fan noise. A faint coil whine under load is possible on some units, as with most electronics.
