Sold as an N100, specced like a Twin Lake chip

Montvfieto markets this appliance as an N100 quad-core, but its own spec sheet names the model 'Twin Lake Mini PC' and quotes a 3.8GHz clock. The N100 tops out at 3.4GHz. A 3.8GHz burst belongs to Intel's N250, a Twin Lake part, so the box you receive may carry a newer chip than the name suggests.

ChipFamilyCoresBurst clockTDP
N100Alder Lake-N43.4GHz6W
N150Twin Lake43.6GHz6W
N250Twin Lake43.8GHz6W

For a firewall, all three chips do the same job. They share four Gracemont efficiency cores, 6MB of cache, a 6W TDP and a single memory channel. The Twin Lake parts simply clock higher, which adds a little headroom for VPN and IDS without changing heat or power in any meaningful way.

The graphics also differ slightly: Twin Lake raises the integrated GPU clock. On a headless router that matters only if the box later becomes a media player, where the N100's own Quick Sync engine already decodes 4K HEVC and VP9 without strain.

  • No drawback if the box arrives with a Twin Lake chip; routing gets marginally faster.
  • One reason to care: matching a second box exactly for a high-availability pair.
  • One thing to do: update the BIOS first, since firmware must know the chip it runs.
Confirm the processor. Ask Montvfieto which chip ships before ordering if the exact model matters. The generational differences are set out under N100 vs N150.

OPNsense pre-installed on request, or bring your own

The box ships barebone, with no memory and no SSD, like most of its rivals. What sets Montvfieto apart is an OS pre-installation service on request. For someone who has never flashed a firewall image, arriving with OPNsense or pfSense already on the drive removes the most intimidating step.

Ask Montvfieto what pre-installation includes, since the standard box has no drive to install onto. If it supplies the memory and SSD as part of the service, the box becomes a configured router. If not, you send the parts or install yourself.

  1. Fit one DDR5 SO-DIMM: 8GB for a dedicated firewall, 16GB if IDS or containers will run.
  2. Fit an M.2 NVMe drive; a small one is plenty for a router.
  3. Write the OPNsense or pfSense installer to a USB stick and boot from it.
  4. Assign WAN and LAN to two of the i226-V ports, then finish setup in the web interface.
  5. Enable automatic power-on in the BIOS so the router restarts after an outage.

The supported list is broad: OPNsense, pfSense, OpenWrt, Linux, Windows 11 and TrueNAS. That range reflects Intel NICs on a standard x86 board more than anything special, since the i226-V runs on FreeBSD's native igc driver and Linux's igc module alike.

A current installer matters. Older firewall releases predate solid i226-V support and may miss ports, so start from the newest image either project offers. Layout ideas for four-port routers sit under N100 firewall mini PCs.

Keep the installer stick afterwards. A router rebuilt from a saved configuration file and a fresh image is back online in minutes, and that fast recovery is why config export belongs on any firewall OS you run.

Market position

How it fits the lineup

N100 mini PC models by type, September 2026. Highlighted: Montvfieto 4-Port Firewall.

One to four NVMe drives plus SATA: a router that holds a small pool

Storage is generous for a firewall barebone. Montvfieto quotes support for one to four M.2 NVMe drives, plus a SATA 3.0 port for a 2.5-inch drive. TrueNAS appears on the supported list, which tells you the intended second job: a compact storage box that also routes, or a router that also keeps backups.

How the four-drive figure is reached depends on slots and adapters that Montvfieto does not itemise, so ask before planning a four-drive pool. Two drives are the dependable baseline for a mirrored boot pool on OPNsense or Proxmox.

  • Two NVMe drives: a ZFS mirror for the router OS.
  • SATA drive: a 2.5-inch SSD or HDD for backups or media.
  • More NVMe: only after confirming the adapter route.

Running TrueNAS and a firewall on one small box is possible but asks a lot of four efficiency cores and one memory channel. ZFS likes memory, and the N100 platform runs a single DDR5 channel, so fit 16GB or more if storage is a real job here. The trade-offs of combining roles are covered under N100 home servers.

Eight USB ports help the storage role too: an external backup drive, a UPS signal cable and a keyboard can all stay plugged in. HDMI and DisplayPort drive two displays for install and rescue work.

Passive cooling keeps the box silent. A busy ZFS pool and a router under load warm a fanless case noticeably, so give it clear air and keep it off the top of a hot modem. Heat behaviour in passive boxes is covered under fanless N100 mini PCs.

Other options

Three other routes

Four i226-V ports for multi-WAN, segments and bonding

The four Intel i226-V ports each run at 2.5GbE, and Montvfieto pitches them for three jobs: multi-WAN routing, network segmentation and bandwidth aggregation. All three are standard features of OPNsense and pfSense, and the Intel NICs make them dependable.

Multi-WAN means two internet lines with failover or load balancing. Segmentation means separate networks for main, guest and IoT devices, so a cheap camera cannot see your laptop. Aggregation bonds two ports to a switch for more combined throughput, though any single transfer still tops out at 2.5Gbit/s.

A common four-port plan uses port one for the ISP, port two for the main LAN, port three for a guest and IoT segment, and port four for a second WAN or a DMZ. VLANs on the LAN port can carry further networks to a managed switch when four physical ports run out.

The oaknode four-port matches this layout almost line for line and names the N100 plainly, with a 48GB memory rating, an included SATA cable and a fan header. The Dozlzyp X4C-XL offers TPM 2.0 and serial-console builds in a larger case.

  • Pick Montvfieto for OS pre-installation and a TrueNAS-friendly storage layout.
  • Pick oaknode for the most clearly stated specifications in this layout.
  • Pick CWWK if you want memory and NVMe fitted at the factory.

Three decisions come with the barebone: confirm the processor, choose pre-installed or blank, and add a DDR5 SO-DIMM plus at least one NVMe drive. Idle power on four-port boxes climbs with every linked port; hedged ranges are under N100 power consumption.

FAQ

Owner questions

Is the Montvfieto firewall an N100?

It is sold as an N100, but its spec sheet names a Twin Lake chip at 3.8GHz, which matches the N250. Montvfieto can confirm the processor if it matters.

No. It is a barebone. Montvfieto offers OS pre-installation on request; ask whether that includes parts.

How many drives can it hold?

Montvfieto quotes one to four M.2 NVMe drives plus one SATA 3.0 drive. Confirm the adapter route before planning more than two NVMe drives.

Which operating systems does it support?

OPNsense, pfSense, OpenWrt, Linux, Windows 11 and TrueNAS.
