- Silent, fanless design
A silent aluminium box with the upgrade room most N100s lack: a real SO-DIMM slot, three storage interfaces, two Gigabit ports and two DB9 serial ports.
The FAH3 ships with 8GB of DDR4 and a 128GB mSATA SSD, which reads like a modest box until the lid comes off. Inside sit a free M.2 NVMe slot for drives up to 2TB, the mSATA slot rated to 1TB, and a SATA 3.0 connector for a 2.5-inch drive up to 7mm thick. Three drives in a 13.5 × 12.7 cm case is rare at this size.
The 128GB mSATA drive is the weak spot, not the platform. Windows 11 Pro and its update cache take a large share of it, so the sensible plan is to treat it as a starter drive:
Memory follows the same pattern. The 8GB stick sits in a standard 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMM slot rated for 3200MHz and up to 32GB. The N100 has a single memory channel, so one module is the full configuration, not a half-populated one.
Adding a 16GB or 32GB module is a five-minute job with a screwdriver, and the DDR4 SO-DIMM format is the cheapest and most common laptop memory around. A spare 8GB stick from an old laptop works too, as long as it is DDR4.

Two DB9 RS232 COM ports mark the FAH3 as an industrial machine first. Receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, scales, CNC controllers and PLCs still speak RS232, and a native port avoids the driver roulette of USB-to-serial adapters. Most consumer N100 boxes dropped serial entirely.
The rest of the management feature set supports unattended duty:
Dual Gigabit Ethernet makes it a capable small firewall for connections up to 1Gbps. One port faces the modem, the other the LAN switch, and pfSense, OPNsense or OpenWrt run comfortably on four Gracemont cores with AES-NI for VPN work. Above a gigabit plan, a box with Intel i226 2.5GbE ports is the better tool; those line up in the N100 firewall mini PC guide.
Two ports also help a plain desktop. One can sit on the office network while the second connects a machine, camera or instrument on an isolated segment, a common pattern on factory floors.
Serial setup is old-school but simple. Windows lists the ports as COM1 and COM2 in Device Manager; Linux exposes them as /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1. Match the baud rate, data bits and parity to the device, and remember that RS232 runs at higher voltages than the 3.3V TTL serial on hobby boards. A microcontroller needs a level shifter, not a direct wire.
The N100's 6W base power is what makes a fanless 0.6kg box practical. The aluminium shell is the heatsink, so there is no fan to clog with dust or wear out, and nothing to hear. That suits dusty workshops, bedrooms and meeting rooms equally.
Passive cooling has rules. The case gets warm to the touch under sustained load, which is normal for a fanless design. Under long all-core loads the chip can hold lower clocks than a fan-cooled twin, depending on room temperature and airflow around the case. Give it space:
Video is generous for an industrial box. Two HDMI 2.0 ports and a DisplayPort 1.2 output drive three 4K@60Hz displays at once, useful for multi-screen signage, a control room wall or an office desk. The UHD Graphics decodes H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 in hardware, so looping 4K signage video costs little CPU time.
Running costs stay small for an always-on machine. At an average draw of 10W, a box uses about 88kWh a year; the real figure moves with the drives fitted, screen activity and how long the CPU spends in turbo. A 3.5-inch-drive NAS or an old tower draws several times that.
Fanless N100 choices from other makers, including smaller consumer designs, are compared on the fanless N100 mini PC page.
FANPEEC's two closest rivals share almost the same case: the HISTTON measures 13.5 × 12.6 × 4.0 cm and the VENOEN 135 × 127 × 39 mm. All three pair a SO-DIMM slot with the same mSATA, M.2 and 2.5-inch storage trio, plus two COM ports. The differences sit in the video outputs, the wireless module and what ships inside.
| FANPEEC FAH3 | HISTTON | VENOEN | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video | 2 × HDMI 2.0 + DP 1.2 | HDMI + VGA | 2 × HDMI 2.0 + DP 1.2 |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6, BT 5.2 | Wi-Fi 5, BT 4.2 | Dual-band Wi-Fi, BT 4.2 |
| Memory ceiling | 32GB DDR4 | 32GB | 32GB DDR4 |
| Extra slot | None stated | Mini PCIe for 4G | None stated |
The FAH3 is the better choice for triple-screen use and modern wireless out of the box. The HISTTON makes sense where a VGA monitor or a 4G modem is part of the job. The VENOEN matches the FAH3's outputs closely, so the memory and drive fitted at purchase decide between those two.
For a quiet desk rather than a factory, the MeLE Quieter 4C is the consumer alternative: smaller, 16GB fitted, but with soldered memory and no RS232. MeLE's full lineup is on the MeLE N100 mini PC page.
Yes. It is fanless and cooled through its aluminium case, so it makes no fan noise. The case runs warm under load, which is normal for passive cooling.
One DDR4 260-pin SO-DIMM at up to 3200MHz and 32GB. It ships with 8GB.
Yes. There is a free M.2 NVMe slot (up to 2TB), the mSATA slot (up to 1TB) and a SATA 3.0 bay for a 2.5-inch drive up to 7mm thick.
For internet plans up to 1Gbps, yes: it has two Gigabit ports and the N100 supports AES-NI. Faster plans need a 2.5GbE box.
The two DB9 RS232 ports connect receipt printers, scanners, scales, CNC and PLC equipment without USB adapters.
